Amazon.com Product Description
Looking to expand beyond the limitations of a CRT TV without losing resolution or clarity? Check out the Sony KDF-60XBR950 60-inch LCD rear-projection TV, which features 3.28 million dots of resolution (1,092,168 for each of the three LCD panels) for a crisp, richly colored picture that looks terrific wherever you sit (if offers a 130-degree viewing angle). The TV includes an integrated ATSC tuner that receives high-definition content, along with a high-contrast, double-AR-coated screen designed for compatibility with the 16:9 enhanced aspect ratio. Unlike many projection TVs from the past, the screen and LCD panels ensure clear focus from the center to the corners, a flicker-free image, and no annoying phosphor burn-in.

The unit comes with Sony's proprietary WEGA engine, which is engineered to deliver a better picture, and employs Direct Digital II Circuitry (with an integrated 3D comb filter) for rich, natural-looking images from any source, along with the smoothing effect of Digital Reality Creation MultiFunction VI technology. Meanwhile, the TV's Multi-Image Driver (MID-X) and twin NTSC tuners let viewers watch two programs from different sources (480i, 480p, 1080i, or 720p) either side by side or in an inset window.

Other features unique to the KDF-60XBR950 include CineMotion reverse 3:2 pulldown, which automatically converts film content to the new TV source to deliver smoother-looking DVD images; enhanced Memory Stick playback, so users can view digital photos and MPEG movies and MP3 audio through the TV; and such convenient user features as a sleep timer, multilingual onscreen display, Speed Surf rapid channel scanning, auto channel programming, closed captioning, a two-event clock/timer, V-chip parental control, and favorite channel.

A movie's audio will sound particularly good through the KDF-60XBR950, which features a 30-watt speaker system (5 watts x 2, plus 20-watt subwoofer), along with your choice of Virtual Dolby (Pro Logic surround sound), TruSurround (adds a 3-D effect to stereo broadcasts), and simulated surround sound (delivers multichannel effect to mono programs). Viewers seeking the highest possible clarity from their movies can hook up their DVD players through the two component video inputs, while HD users can take advantage of the DVI-HDTV interface. The TV also includes one front and three rear S-video inputs, one front and three rear composite inputs, one front and five rear audio inputs, one front and two rear i.Link inputs, one optical output, one Control-S input and one output, one optical audio output, and one subwoofer output.

What's in the Box
TV, remote control, two AA batteries, user's manual.

After 2 year the light engine goes and Sony will not do anything for it.
Sony settled a class action lawsuit with reguards to theese t.v.'s
and anyone that has problems now are on there own.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible picture, still!   November 25, 2009

I paid [...] for this TV and have had it for just over 5 years. Never had a problem with it. It is only limited today by its not having an HDMI input, therefore your HD viewing by BluRay or HD Cable is limited to 720p. I keep looking at the new TVs of this size, all boasting 120 nad 240HZ etc., 1080P etc. I personally want to change TVs one day so that I have HDMI for my HD video camera, but I just can't,... I have to say that the picture of this 5 year old TV, limited to 720p, still blows away the pictures on almost all TVs I have seen (except for a much more expensive Pioneer Elite - now not sold any longer). I recommend this TV to anyone. OH, another thing to consider is the SD viewing. The processors in this TV (on probably in XBRs to today) is so good that crappy SD cable channels often look like crystal clear HD. Many of the new TVs (to me) look like crap in standard DEF. Just FYI, you pay for the processing.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS SONY TV MODEL !!!   November 11, 2009

Sony TV model KDF60XBR950 has an inbred defective "optical block or engine" which will manifest
itself after about 3-4 years of use. A bright neon-like blue line will appear at the bottom of the screen and will gradually get wider & invade the whole screen image.
After multiple tries Sony "Customer Relations" (that's a joke)refuses to admit that there is anything wrong with this model even though there is plenty of evidence to the contrary.
They refuse to extend warranty on this $550.00 part + labor even though they were aware of a problem because they did extend a warranty for a short period in June 2008.
Please be aware of this defective Sony product and probably others and make special note of their total lack of concern when you contact their so-called "Customer Relations" Dept. Its true name ought to be "We couldn't care less" Dept.

Please accept this for what its worth...

I have owned this TV for 5 years now. It has been the biggest albatross I have ever owned.

Thank god I purchased a 5 year warranty. If I had not, it would have cost me over $4000 to have maintained over these years.

I realize this is obsolete technology and no one is considering buying this TV now, but, if for some reason you are considering getting one of these.... DONT!!!!!!!

It goes thru bulbs and optical blocks like water.

DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GET A LCD!!!!

but whatever you do, do NOT consider getting this TV.

3 out of 5 stars TV has been excellent for almost 5 years, but starting to fail....   October 2, 2008

Since I have been searching on this issue for about a week now I thought it would be useful to record my experience for those of you who might be looking to pick up one of these sets used.

For almost 5 years (this December) our 60XBR950 has performed admirably with good brightness, color, and decent contract/blacks given it is a rear projection LCD. Up to a couple of weeks ago I would have given it high recommendations, and in fact picked up a smaller version of the same set for my in laws just over a year ago.

However, as I have found out personally and via some internet searching this set and its cousins have some quality issues with regard to the optical block. I noticed a few weeks ago while watching a football game that the center of the screen was slightly grayer than the rest. This problem has progressed a bit to the point where I am seeing:

1. A definite fade in colors in the center of the screen. I believe it is the green LCD but haven't put a green-only image on the screen to check this out.

2. When my Vista Media Center menus are on the screen for an extended period of time I get some blue streaking through subsequent video. This tends to fade after a bit. Note that I never saw this before so it may be related to issue #1.

The good news in all of this (hopefully) is that I purchased a 5-year extended warranty on the set when I got it back in 2003. This was through Tweeter, which isn't in business in my area anymore, but is still around elsewhere. I am digging out the receipt this weekend and hopefully they will be able to take care of me. It is not clear whether Sony's extended coverage of the set applies to me, and I have also seen reports that they tend to replace your old optical block with a refurbished one that may or may not have other problems....
